It doesn't matter if they're hospice or not, they still need to breath comfortably.

I fully agree with your feelings on calling the ambulance for a DNR patient. Here in Detroit, even if I have a signed DNR at home and the family agrees, if someone else (neighbor, confused auntie)has panicked and called EMS or the cops, they will insist on an ambulance.TDubnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22584268.post-35366282173484985482007-05-03T17:40:00.000-07:002007-05-03T17:40:00.000-07:00The one from the prison shrink - I've worked in ma...The one from the prison shrink - I've worked in max setting myself, with a large MH population. It makes sense that you'd first tend to the GSW that obviously had a chance to make it instead of the GSW patient that probably won't. I read a lot of books about wars and that's what doctors in the arena constantly do, without regard to 'scumbag' status.

However, all that aside, I'm glad you tended the policeman. I feel like the expectation is we should be above such things as personal involvement or human responses. But we're human, aren't we? I was reading the posts from the nurses and others- and all i can say is that i have never laughed so hard or been so happy to hear a MD say the things that the midlevels think all they time but cannot always go through with. Just because we have healthcare facilites and trained staff in the US does not mean that everyone is deserving of care- sorry but that is the truth. I wouldnt have lifted a finger for the guy who shot the cop either- nor would most of my co-workers. Ambulances do the same that they can- 14g needles, two lines, bumpy rides, whatever- and it seems like it is always floor nurses who are all up in arms about things- not the nurses in the ED who actually work with all the patients.
So basically- i have loved reading your blog, i have actually learned a lot and i hope that you keep posting and practicing like you have.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22584268.post-16350240311752215002007-04-24T20:13:00.000-07:002007-04-24T20:13:00.000-07:00Amen.And when you get comments like those, you can...Amen.

And when you get comments like those, you can always borrow the biker code:

"If I had to explain it to you, you wouldn't understand...."Bohemian Road Nurse...http://www.blogger.com/profile/02136803397641401011noreply@blogger.com
