Taking a break

I'm taking a sabatical and won't be blogging for a while. Will explain later. I've had tough days at work before but what I'm currently going through has driven me over the edge. Medicine's too depressing right now. Lawsuits to deal with, hospital politics, the usual CRAPPOLA that have sapped the energy out of me. It's all a slippery slope that I've ranted about last February. Here's an excerpt:

"Now I'm no card carrying left wing liberal who espouse socialized health care either, so don't even go there. I'm merely pointing out the fact that we have a real national crisis at hand and it seems that none of our politicians know how or even care to solve. When ~47 millions of Americans do not have health insurance, we have a big problem. When a person in America has to make a decision between food on the table or pills in a bottle to take for his/her medical problems, it is an national disgrace. When a man has to resort to committing a petty crime to land him in jail just so he can get the medical care that he couldn't otherwise afford, it is disturbing. When hospitals pass on the costs of healthcare to the public by marking everything up by 1000%, we all have to pay painfully. When doctors, who all took the Hippocratic Oath, are too fearful of litigation to take care of patients, order more unnecessary tests (shotgun CYA medicine), spread the liability by consulting other doctors and specialists to get everyone under the umbrella, or worse yet, abandon clinical privilege at a hospital...the situation sucks all around. When hospital and HMO administrators without any clinical experience or medical background can dictate what tests and studies physicians can or cannot order, the ship is being run by idiots and is doom to sink. We're headed toward disaster, there's no doubt about it. This isn't all new. Everyone knows that this health care crisis exist but our nation choose to turn a blind eye. It is analogous to knowing that the levies in New Orleans cannot withold a hurricane for decades but we choose to ignore it all the same.

Sorry to hear all is not cheery at work for you right now... hope it improves, and quickly.

In the meantime, one of your faithful readers will miss your updates.

Take care.

I check your blog daily. This is pretty disappointing. I'm an EMT and enjoy the reading material! Good luck to ya...I'll check back to see if you have started back up.

I'm so sorry to hear this, Charity Doc. Listen, if you want to join a revolution, drop me a line and let's talk: val.jones@revolution.com We may be able to form a national movement to reduce the crappola. At least we're the size that could make a difference!

I am very much a lurker, but I have enjoyed your writing. I hope you find a way to slog through the swamp without drowning in it. Maybe you should find some dry land to rest on for a while? Maybe an ER in a suburban community for a year or so...

I'm so sorry - and you chose the same day to bid adieu that I did. May it be better for you - SOON!

Hang in there, man. Sometimes a little break is just the right thing. Do something fun and relaxing, and know that you'll be missed.

You have a great blog Charity Doc. So come back when you can. i am leaving you in my links.

Health care issues are frightening. Everything as you said. If a person gets really sick, they can lose everything - even with insurance. Then of course there are the uninsured or the insured but everything isn't covered and so expenses pile up. Then there are the people who fall between the cracks who make too much money to get any assistance but not enough to provide for all the necessities.

I know doctors are busy in their professions, but are they as individuals or the AMA able to impact the situation in any way for the better?

I am sorry you are going through a difficult time at the moment and I wish you well in whatever is going on in your life.

Wow, I can't believe I read the entire post you linked to in the other article. I hear every word you are saying. At the same time I need to force myself to see the bright spots in eveyr shift. I need this job to pay the insane student loans. I am out as soon as I can be. Yet I realize that i am in a privileged position to interact with people when they are at their lowest moments in life. See my recent post "fallen star"...How often do we get to be a comfort to someone with such a tragedy? That family will never forget that day, and I have been trained to respond to exactly that type of scenario.

Whatever. Hang in there. When you get this most recent lawsuit squared away, then retire. Or come back. You'll have steeled yourself against anything that could possibly be worse.

If you don't do it, there's a nother young buck who will work in yoru place. Or mabye not. See how well they get along without you...mabye you'll get a raise.

I know I can't really understand what's happening over there, and I won't try. All I have to say is that I really enjoy this blog, and will keep coming around, hoping to read again. I can bid you farewell (for a short while only,I hope) with, at the very least, the assurance and promise that at least one prospective MD has greatly enjoyed what he read here, and took all of it to heart.

Stay healthy and safe.

I pray for you a healing and restful Sabbatical. As a professional in care-giving employment, I know the importance of taking care of yourself - physically, emotionally & spiritually.

Take good care of YOU, Doc!

See you when you get back! And know you're in my prayers.

Hey,
Run the CCC, go for a swim, take a trip somewhere you've never been. When you get back, stop by little Charity in Houma and we'll buy you lunch.

I just started reading your blog a few weeks ago. I'll send out some prayers for you. Please drop by once in a while and say you are alive-- maybe change the date or something.

Lawsuits-- my mother wanted to sue a bunch of doctors over my father's death. The government mandated proceedures killed him-- it's Medicaid's way of keeping our country's longevity payments down. She found out that if she sued that she couldn't speak out. Now she is making headway with some legislation (and lots of people on her side) and she keeps talking about the "stupid doctors." I told her that the "stupid doctors" didn't like the regs any more than she did and are probably behind her, silently cheering her on.

I hope that at some point you can convince the court that you are a person who heals people and that your patients and you are on the same side.
